This coection of artices in commemoration of academician F. I. Stcher


batsky, the eminent Soviet Orientaist who speciaised in Indoogy, Tibetan
studies and Buddhoogy, fas into two parts. Part one presents the papers
read at the session hed to mark the centenary of Stcherbatsky's birth
(Moscow Leningrad, '1966); part two carries artices and notes devoted
to the history and cuture of the East (mosty India, Centra Asia and the
Far East) as we as to genera and specific probems of Buddhoogy, Indoogy
and Tibetan studies. Stcherbatsky took up a these subjects; he stands
out as a great authority on Indian cuture, ancient and medieva phiosophy,
Indian reigions, ancient Indian iterature and science. His main fied, however,
was Buddhism (its phiosophy and history) and the cutures of those

Asian countries where Buddhism in widespread.

The main trends of Stcherbatsky's work prompted the tite of this voume,
Indian Cuture and Buddhism. The contributions to the voume show that
the traditions of Stcherbatsky's schoo are successfuy continued and deve


oped by Soviet schoars, and the probems of Orienta cuture and ideoogy
in the past and today hod a very important pace in their researches.

Not ony has Stcherbatsky's work retained its significance for the deveopment
of Orienta studies, but it is in itsef the subject-matter of scientific
anaysis, making up a specia branch of modern Buddhoogy. To this day his
studies are reprinted in many countries of the word and transated into many
anguages. It is noteworthy that the Soviet Indoogica Series pubished in
India, recenty carried two voumes of artices by Stcherbatsky. Introducing
these artices, Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya, the we-known Indian phiosopher
arid historian, expressed the Indians' deep appreciation of the work of Stcherbatsky,
who, in his view, had heped the Indians to discover their own past
and restore the right perspective of their phiosophica heritage.

This voume wi hep to apreciate sti more profoundy the outstanding
contribution made by Academician F. I. Stcherbatsky to the deveopment of
Orienta studies on a word scae.
